Radford Takes Series Finale from High Point

RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders scored three runs early to pace themselves to their second straight series win, this time over High Point. Vinnie Venturi and Alex Perkins both posted strong outings on the mound to help pace Radford to the win.

To open the game the Highlanders scored a run in each of the first three innings. Garrett Matheny got the offense started with a single into center, stealing second, advancing to third on a fielder's choice, and then finally reaching home on a wild pitch for the 1-0 lead.

Matheny was involved in the scoring once again in the second inning, as he singled to the exact same spot in center to drive in Dac Archer who doubled earlier in the inning. After High Point tied the game up at two with a pair of runs in the top of the third, the Highlanders struck right back for the lead thanks to a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded by Anthony Galati.

From there, Venturi took control of the game on the mound. Venturi worked around trouble and kept the Panthers' bats relatively quiet as he cruised to 4.2 innings of work. Venturi limited his walks to just three, two of which came with two outs already in the inning.

Perkins took over in the fifth inning and escaped a jam with two runners on as Straton Podaras nailed a runner trying to steal third on a pitch in the dirt. From there Perkins would just allow one run over his 4.2 innings, striking out three and giving up just two hits. His biggest moment came in the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs. Perkings got the strikeout and preserved the 4-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth Perkins pitched a clean inning sitting down the Panthers in order. This sealed the win for their Highlanders, their first of the season by just one run.

Overall, on the day Matheny had an exciting day with two hits, scored two runs, drove a run in, and stole three bases. Podaras also had a two-hit day, while the designated hitter Dac Archer stayed hot with a three-hit day. The Highlanders tallied 10 hits on the day, which is their sixth straight game with double digit hits.
