Baseball Drops Series Opener at Longwood

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team dropped the series opener to Longwood, 10-7, on Friday night at Buddy Bolding Stadium.

Radford struck first scoring a run each on a sac bunt and a fielding error by the Lancer third baseman. Longwood answered with three runs off the bat of Hunter Gilliam who touched them all with a home run.

The Lancers tacked on to their lead with a two-run single in the third inning. That put them ahead 5-2 until the Highlanders cut into the lead thanks to an RBI double by Jalen Buster in the fourth and a solo home run from David Bryant. The solo shot was Bryant's sixth home run of the season and made it a 5-4 game.

Longwood plated three runs on two hits and took advantage of one error in the fifth to double its lead, 8-4. The Highlanders answered with a pair of runs in the seventh but the Lancers negated the pair of runs with a pair of their own in the bottom of the frame and maintained a four-run cushion, 10-6.

Bryant drove in his second run of the night as Jalen Buster scored on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth but Radford left four runners aboard in the final two frames – including the bases loaded in the eighth.

Seven of the nine batters had a hit on Friday night. Sean Cheely drew three walks and Connor Bagnieski tallied two RBIs, as well as Bryant.

Ryan Bywaters, Hunter Williams, Bruce Hudson and Landon Higgerson all saw action on the mound.
