Late Inning Rally Not Enough as Radford Drops Midweek Tilt

RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders plated five runs in the seventh and eighth innings but it wasn't enough as the Radford baseball team fell to Gardner-Webb, 9-7, on Tuesday night at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Sean Cheely had a career-high five RBIs – all coming in the seventh and eighth innings. He single-handedly tried to rally the troops with an RBI double that scored Garrett Matheny in the seventh inning and blasted a grand slam down the left field line in the eighth.

Radford was behind 9-2 before Cheely's display of late heroics. Seven of Gardner-Webb's nine runs came in the first three innings. They manufactured a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before David Bryant hit his third home run in as many games to tie the game at one.

The Runnin' Bulldogs took advantage of walks to plate three runs in the second and added three more in the third on three hits. Radford made it a 7-2 game as Straton Podaras scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.

GWU added a couple more runs in the sixth to take a hefty 9-3 lead. Tyler Bowes kept the Highlanders within striking distance holding the team scoreless for 3.0 innings. He only walked two and struck out one. Landon Higgerson also added a strikeout in a scoreless effort for an inning.

There were a combined 18 walks as each pitching staff walked nine batters in the game.

Offensively, Cheely was the only Highlander with a multi-hit game going 2-for-5 with a run scored and five RBIs. Matheny scored two runs and earned a hit going 1-for-4. The two batters had Radford's only doubles.
