Highlanders Finish Regular Season with Big Win

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Radford (7-2-1, 6-2-1 BSC) took down Winthrop (2-6-1, 2-5-1) with ease, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon. The win locks up the #2 seed for the Highlanders in the Big South tournament, their third straight year finishing third or better in the conference.

Radford took the lead just four minutes into the game off a corner kick set up by Lily McLane that found Gabi Paupst who sent it sailing past the outstretched goalie for her third goal of the year. The Highlander defense was stout from then on, limiting the Eagles to just two shots the entire half.

At the other end of the first half in the 41st minute, the Highlanders got their second goal from Kateri Schoettinger. Schoettinger got her scoring chance off the ricocheted shot from Paupst that hit the crossbar, but her first attempt also hit the crossbar. Schoettinger collected the rebound again and sent it into the net for the score making it 2-0 going into the half.

The second half was more of the same from the Highlanders as they held the Eagles to just two shots once again. It was a quiet half until the 84th minute when Katelyn O'Donnell made a perfect shot from about 30 feet out into the top right of the net. After that it was just a matter of running out the clock to close out the win for the Highlanders.

All four of Winthrop's shots did come on goal, but Lexi Dean was perfect in saving all four of those shots. It was the third time the senior had recorded four or more saves in a match this season, and brought her season total up to 25. In the last 650 minutes of gameplay the Highlanders have also just conceded one goal thanks to Dean's presence in the goal and strong defensive play all around by the team.
