Millirons, Wright, and Gilmore All Set the Tone at Day One of Big South Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Highlanders saw a perfect start to the Big South Championships Monday afternoon highlighted by Rachel Millirons' program record in the 10k race.

"We had an incredible start to day one," commented director of track and field Shelli Sayers. "Maddie was so impressive with all four personal records."

Throughout the day Maddie Wright was constantly breaking her own personal records while competing through the first half of the heptathlon. Her first personal record came in in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.77.

After a long weather delay Wright showed no signs of slowing down setting two more personal records in the high jump and shot put events. Capping off her day of personal records was the 200-meter race which cemented an incredible start to the heptathlon. Wright will look to carry her success into day two where she will compete in the long jump, javelin, and the 800-meter.

The night ended with an incredible showing from Millirons and MegAnne Gilmore in the 10k. Millirons took home a podium finish at second place with a time of 36:15.61 which shattered the previous program record by over 30 seconds. Millirons also dusted the next closest competitor, beating third place by over 20 seconds.

Gilmore also posted a time in the 10k that was good for sixth-best in program history. Gilmore and Millirons are the first Highlanders to crack the top-ten for the 10k since Annsley Eckert did it in 2018.

"Rachel ran such a gutsy race," added Sayers. "To come away with a school record is impressive. I couldn't be more proud of her and MegAnne in the 10k."
