Highlanders Take Road Mid-Week as Offense Resurges

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford baseball team used two big offensive innings Tuesday night in a big 9-6 conference victory over Gardner-Webb.

Garrett Matheny got his big offensive night started early. In the first inning he drew a walk, stole a base, and came home to score off an RBI singles by David Bryant. Gardner-Webb would grab a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the first, but Radford responded for their first of two big innings of the night in the second.

After two quick outs to start the inning, Jalen Buster and Connor Bagniesky kept the inning alive with a single and hit by pitch. That set up a huge swing by Matheny as homered to left field to put Radford back out in front 4-2. That lead would hold until the bottom of the third as Gardner-Webb tied the game at 4-all.

In the fifth inning, Radford's offense exploded again. Similar to the third inning Radford hit into two early outs but the Runnin' Bulldogs were not able to find the third out before the damage was done. Bryant and Tyler Myint singled which allowed Anthony Galati to single in a run for the slim 5-4 lead. Will Harless would add to the Highlanders lead by cranking the second three-run homer of the night for the team.

With the score now at 8-4, the Highlander bullpen took over and allowed just two runs over the final five frames of the game. Bruce Hudson played a big part of that as he tossed three innings of one-run ball. Alex Perkins entered the game in the eighth and sealed up the game with ease. After the first batter walked, Perkins retired the side via strikeouts to seal a 9-6 win.

Matheny and Harless' three-RBI nights fueled the offense, but Bryant also continued to cruise with a three-hit night and Buster broke out in a big way at the bottom of lineup for three hits as well. Sean Cheely and Galati were the other two Highlanders to pick up multi-hit performances.
