Radford Falls to Gardner-Webb in Series Opener

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford baseball team fell to Gardner-Webb, 10-8, in the series opener on Thursday night in Boiling Springs.

The Highlanders struck first with three runs through the first four innings. Either Garrett Matheny or Dac Archer played a part in the runs being scored. First it was all Matheny who blasted a solo home run to left field to lead off the game.

He added to the 1-0 lead when he drove in Archer with a sac fly in the second inning. Archer later came around to score in the fourth inning when Connor Bagnieski drove him in with a double to center field.

All was going well for Radford until the fourth and fifth innings. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored nine in the two innings combined. GWU scored four in the bottom of the fourth with a single and a three-run home run then added five in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-3 lead.

Dom Peroni had both of Gardner-Webb's home runs and had seven RBIs in three plate appearances. He finished the game 2-for-4 with the pair of home runs.

The Highlanders added two runs in the seventh with back-to-back RBI doubles from Sean Cheely and David Bryant. GWU erased one of the runs with another home run, this one from Keiji Parkhurst, and made it a 10-5 contest.

Radford wasn't out of it and scored three runs on four hits in the ninth inning. Bryant tallied one of the runs with an RBI single – his second RBI of the contest. Then Will Harless hit a two-run home run to left field with two outs and made it a two-run game.

Unfortunately, the game ended on a 10-pitch at-bat with the game-tying run at the plate.

Cheely and Bryant went 3-for-5 each with Cheely scoring two runs and tallying one RBI, where Bryant drove in two and scored one. The seven and nine-hole hitters, Archer and Bagnieski had two hits each. The top four hitters in Radford's lineup had eight of Radford's 13 hits.

Tyler Bowes earned the start on the bump and tossed four innings, while Landon Higgerson saw one inning of relief. Storm Mace pitched three innings and only allowed one run while striking out four.
