Highlanders Finish Season with Split Doubleheader at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford baseball team split its doubleheader in the regular season finale against Gardner-Webb Friday afternoon, grabbing the second game with a strong 8-4 win.

Game One
The Highlanders opened up the first game of the doubleheader with a lead in the opening inning. After a walk Garrett Matheny found himself on third base after a ground out and walk and David Bryant brought him in with a single to right center for the early 1-0 lead.

The lead would hold for three innings as Greg Duncan had a decent start to his afternoon. Duncan struck out three hitters and allowed just one hit through the first three frames. With two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, however, Gardner-Webb would grab a 5-1 lead.

Radford didn't back down going into the sixth inning after Gardner-Webb hit a batter and walked two to load the bases with no outs. Dac Archer got the first run of the inning in through a sac fly while Connor Bagnieski got a clutch two-out single to make it just a 3-5 game.

Radford's offense would spark again in the ninth while trailing 3-7. Sean Cheely got the inning started with a triple and he was brought home thanks to a wild pitch. Radford got clutch hitting with two outs once again as Will Harless this time recorded the two-out single to make it a 5-7 game and represent the tying run on first. Gardner-Webb would record the final out unfortunately, stopping the comeback attempt and sealing the first game of the day.

Game Two
Similar to the first two games of the weekend series, Radford would go on to jump out in front during the opening inning of the game. The first three batters of the game for Radford all recorded hits, with Cheely and Bryant both recording RBI doubles. With two outs Anthony Galati doubled in the third run of the inning, and the offensive burst would be capped off by a wild pitch that scored Will Harless.

With a four-run lead, starting pitcher Ryan Bywaters was able settle in and toss a quality 4.1 innings for the Highlanders. Bywaters struck out five batters and only allowed the one run, exiting and giving way to Bruce Hudson with a 4-1 lead.

The offense heated back up once Bywaters exited, as the team would go on to score four more runs over the last four innings of the game. Matheny belted a two-run homer to left to highlight the sixth while Radford added two more runs thanks to a pair of wild pitches with runners on third.

Hunter Williams would enter in the ninth inning and seal things up to help Radford finish the season in the win column, throwing three strikeouts in the process. Radford split the doubleheader today, winning game two 8-4 and bringing their season record to 23-23 overall and 17-19 in the Big South.
