Highlanders Start Strong but Drop Both Games in Doubleheader Against Campbell

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team fell in both games of the doubleheader against Campbell Saturday despite strong starts in both games.

Game One
In the first game of the day the Highlanders were competitive through the first six innings. Radford struck first in the first inning thanks to Anthony Galati who cashed in on a Camel defensive miscue with a two-out RBI double.

With a 1-0 lead Campbell struck back, though, with three runs (one unearned). After Campbell scored a fourth run in the top of the third, the Highlanders struck back with two runs in the bottom half of the third.

The first run came off the hot bat of David Bryant who crushed a home run to right field. Following another Campbell error, Straton Podaras made his way around the bases through wild pitches to make it a 3-4 deficit.

After a scoreless frame in the fourth by starter Greg Duncan, Radford tied the game up as Bryant came up clutch once again with a two-out RBI single. From there Duncan continued to cruise and threw three straight scoreless innings to cap off his strong afternoon.

Campbell touched up the Highlanders for six runs across the final three frames however, sealing a 10-4 final score that didn't go Radford's way.

Game Two
The second game of the day was more of a pitching duel between the two squads. Ryan Bywaters was exceptional for the Highlanders through 4.1 innings, allowing just one earned run while giving up just three hits against a strong offense. Landon Higgerson took over later in the game for Radford and tossed two scoreless frames with a strikeout facing just one batter over the minimum.

Radford's offense was held quiet until the eighth inning where Galati added to his strong day in the field and at the plate with a powerful home run into right field. Earlier in the game, Galati made a smooth sliding catch in foul territory to help with Bywaters' effort in a scoreless frame.

Over the two games, Podaras was dominant behind the plate. Podaras caught six Camels runners attempting to steal a base with four of those caught baserunners coming in the second game of the doubleheader. Offensively Podaras notched three hits in game one while scoring a run.

David Bryant also continues to impress at the plate adding three hits, two runs, two RBI's, a home run, and two walks over the two games. The Highlanders as a team worked counts all day drawing 10 total walks amongst the two games.

Up Next
Radford will hit the road for some midweek action against Gardner-Webb next Tuesday before returning home for their final home series of the regular season later in the week against Charleston Southern.
