Parris’ Electric Debut Powers Highlanders to Double Overtime Victory

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford women's soccer program had an exciting first match of the season Thursday night, as Kat Parris highlighted with a spectacular debut assisting two goals and scoring the golden goal in double overtime to give Radford the 3-2 win over Mount St. Mary's.

It only took 13 minutes for the Highlanders to get on the board in the first half, as last season's top goal-scorer Brianna Oliver danced around three defenders to thread a goal past the outstretched goalie. The Highlanders were able to hold onto a 1-0 lead minutes later as goalkeeper Lauren Seedlock made a diving save.

Mount St. Mary's would tie the game up at one halfway through the first half, but the Highlanders played stout defense from then on not allowing another goal for 64 minutes. Radford took a 1-1 tie into halftime but out-shot Mount St. Mary's 10-4.

In the second half the Highlanders played aggressively and maintained ball possession in enemy territory for the majority of the half. Radford kicked seven more corner kicks and ripped off 11 more shots.

With the rain pouring down in buckets mid-way through the second half, the aggressiveness paid off as Amy Swain would score her first career goal in the 61st minute. Parris added another assist to her night with a pass between two defenders which set up Swain's shot from about 30 yards out.

A lightning delay would halt the game just after the Highlanders' goal. When play resumed, the Highlanders had multiple shots on goal but were unable to convert. Freshman Anais Oularbi got off two good-looking shots late in the second half but the Mountaineers goalie made good saves on both attempts.

With just 19 seconds on the clock, the Mountaineers were able to finally break through for a game-tying goal that forced the game into overtime. Radford started strong in the first overtime period getting two early shots, but Mount St. Mary's also got off two shots before the first overtime period ended.

It would only take a couple minutes into the second overtime period however, for Parris to put a bow on her amazing debut with a golden goal. The Mountaineers had a pass intercepted by Kennedy Dunnings that she then passed perfectly to Parris who had been breaking free from defenders all night. Parris found space and gave the ball a soft touch which found its way to the back of the net securing a 3-2 Highlanders victory.

Throughout the game the Highlanders led in just about every category over the Mountaineers. Radford recorded 28 shots and 11 corner kicks total while holding their opponent to just 10 shots and two corner kicks.

"I think we played very average in the first half and lacked the focus necessary early in the game," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "Second half was a completely different performance but we needed to finish opportunities better. Their late goal hurt but to have the resilience to come back and win in overtime was impressive."

The Highlanders will be back in action for a road match with Wofford on August 27th with the game being streamed on ESPN+.
