Defense Stands Strong as Highlanders Blank Buccaneers

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's soccer team put on a defensive show Thursday night on the home turf in a 1-0 victory. The ETSU offense was relentless but Radford did not falter as Amy Swain added the winning goal in the 28th minute.

Lauren Seedlock had a great night in the net for Radford finishing the night with four saves. Seedlock kept the Buccaneers scoreless in more ways than can be found on a scoresheet as she played a pivotal part in punching out multiple corner kicks and defusing offensive pushes.

Kayla Thomas, Kennedy Dunnings and Saleena Lynch were also great in keeping the zero on the opponent's scoreboard. Thomas especially stole multiple moments for ETSU to score.

It was Swain's goal in the 28th minute that allowed the Highlanders to finish victorious. Radford played the corner kick perfectly as Lily McLane played it short before getting her pass back and placing it perfectly into the drawn-out defense and goalie which left the net open for Swain to knock it in.

KEY STATS
  • Radford marked its second straight shutout victory following last week's 7-0 whacking of Wofford. It also marks the first time this season that ETSU has been shut out.
  • ETSU was previously 2-0 against Big South competition before entering this match.
  • Radford begins the season 3-0 for the first time since 2017 when the team started the season with seven straight victories.
  • McLane notched her second assist of the season in just two games played while Swain's goal marked her second of the season.

QUOTABLE
"
A lot of credit to East Tennessee State. It was really a good game and once we got up 1-0 it changed the game a little bit. We got more defensive, and we rode it out. I'm really happy with our squad for finding a way to gut check and finish off a 1-0 game against a quality team. It was a good team effort especially defensively late in the game." - Head Coach Ben Sohrabi
