Women’s Soccer Falls in Hard-Fought Match to Longwood

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program fell to Longwood Saturday afternoon 1-0 despite out-shooting the Lancers by five shots.

Radford came out the gates strong in the game, creating offensive opportunities early that just didn't quite find the back of the net. Radford is one of the best teams in the country in creating corner kicks and that carried into tonight with another seven for the Highlanders.

In the 32nd minute, Longwood would strike for the lone goal of the cold night. After a yellow card, Longwood took advantage with a sharp pass into the box and converted a header that gave them the lead that would hold the rest of the way.

Kat Parris, Katelyn O'Donnell and Lilly Short paced the Highlanders' offense with three shots a piece on the night. Trinity Veras rebounded with a strong second half of the game, collecting saves on all three shots on goal in the final 45 minutes.

"Longwood's a good team and they came in with a game plan," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "They were fighting for their conference lives and by winning tonight kept their postseason hopes alive. I thought both teams played well and hard, but in the end they got the goal. I think we need to have a bit more quality when we get close to goal. We had our chances and didn't capitalize."

The Highlanders will have work to do over the final couple weeks of Big South play, and that starts this Saturday night with a home match-up with Charleston Southern set for 7 p.m. The game will also feature Senior Night for the Highlanders as the team honors six seniors who spent their entire careers with Radford.
