Offense Catches Fire for Senior Night Victory Over Charleston Southern

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program caught fire Saturday night for a 5-0 victory over Charleston Southern. It was also Senior Night for Radford as the team honored Alayna Carter, Avery Howell, Saleena Lynch and Katie Oliver for their contributions to the program.

The Highlanders wasted no time getting on the board. It was Kat Parris who got the Highlanders scoring early with a nifty goal inside the box that was assisted by the senior Oliver. The old saying goes, "If it ain't broken don't fix it" and the Highlanders subscribed to that for their next goal. Seven minutes later, Parris connected for a goal assisted by Oliver once again to make it a 2-0 lead.

As the first half started to wind down, the Highlanders' offense continued to fire. In the 40th minute June Stevens scored her third goal of the season as the offense crashed into the box with force. Skyler Prosser picked up her first assist on the night as well to make it a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

There was no catching your breath as just five minutes into the second half Radford struck again. This time it was Amy Swain who took a deep pass from Helena Willson and weaved through the Buccaneers defense to make it 4-0.

Not content with two assists earlier in the match, Oliver got into the goal-scoring fun for the Highlanders' final goal of the night. Prosser ripped a shot that ricocheted off the goalie and from there Oliver collected the shot and placed it perfectly for the 5-0 lead.

The Buccaneers got off a barrage of shots on the night but only two came on goal. Jordan Phillips saved both of those shots to keep the shutout intact. The defensive backline including Saleena Lynch, Kennedy Dunnings and Helena Willson were impossible to get by. It was the third shutout of the season and first since shutting out Winthrop on the road in late September.

"I thought we played extremely well tonight in all facets," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I'm really happy to get a win on Senior Day. This senior class is so impressive on and off the field. They're great people, great students and great soccer players. They are the epitome of what a student-athlete should be at Radford University."

With the offensive outburst tonight, many Highlanders added to their season totals. Parris and Swain were both active and remain in a tie for the team lead of points with 15 each. Parris and Kirnos both also eclipsed 1,000 minutes played in the season during tonight's game. Prosser's two assists tonight were a single-game high for the junior and also marked a single-season high of assists.

The Highlanders will have some time before their next Big South match as the team prepares for the final leg of conference play. The final two matches will be pivotal in Radford's hopes of making the four-team Big South playoff field. Radford will be on the road to face Gardner-Webb next Saturday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
