Dubose's Two Goals Lift Highlanders over Winthrop

RADFORD, Va. — Jared Dubose scored two goals, while the Radford offense put up a season-high 20 shots, as the Highlanders took down Winthrop 3-0 in Big South Conference action on Wednesday evening at Cupp Stadium. It was the first Big South Conference victory of the season for Radford, as they snapped a four-game losing streak in the process.

"I am really happy for our guys," said Radford head coach Chris Barrett. "They have been working so hard and have kept an incredibly positive attitude through some tough losses, and really deserved this win. I truly believe if we can continue to keep the positive energy flowing and the high level of intensity we can beat everyone on our schedule. I am really proud of our team tonight."

The Highlanders (2-7-1, 1-2-0 Big South) dominated from the onset, as Dubose scored his first marker in the 15th minute. After a misplay by Winthrop defender Taeyoon Oh, Dubose dribbled the ball into the penalty area and sent a beautiful chip-shot over the head of goalkeeper Sam Bell. The ball found the back left corner of the net, putting Radford ahead 1-0.

In the second half, Dubose found paydirt again, this time with help from his teammates. In the 48th minute, Samuel Schwarz sent a cross from a near-zero angle in front of the net, and the Woodbridge, Va. native was right there, heading the ball into the goal for his second tally of the night and a 2-0 lead. It was Dubose's first career two-goal game.

Radford dominated the stat sheet, collecting 20 shots to Winthrop's nine. Six of those shots were on goal. The Highlanders scored three goals for the first time all season, and also recorded their largest margin of victory.

Winthrop (0-11-0, 0-4-0) failed to generate much of an attack, as the Eagles were held to only three shots on goal and just one corner kick, which came in the 90th minute. Radford keeper Joseba Incera played a helping hand, making three saves as he earned his second shutout of the season.

Forward Collin Hawes, who subbed into the game late in the second half, added an insurance goal for the Highlanders in the 83rd minute, while Patrick Figaro was credited with the assist.
