Women’s Basketball Cruises to Victory Over Eagles

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Women's Basketball program cruised to the tune of a 67-50 victory over Winthrop Thursday night, their second straight win on the Carilion Clinic Court inside the Dedmon Center.

Winthrop opened the game on a 4-0 run but a couple of layups by Jackie Christ and Destinee Marshall tied the game back up. A pair of three-pointers helped the Eagles build a 12-7 lead, but that would be their largest of the game as Radford responded with a 7-1 run to retake the lead.

The balanced attack by the Highlanders continued into the second quarter as Bridget Birkhead nailed a three to open things up and Taiye Johnson built on the lead with her first points of the night. The Eagles didn't let the Highlanders build their lead too high, however, as they used strong three-point shooting to keep the score at just a 31-30 favor for the Highlanders at the half.

The Eagles briefly retook the lead at the start of the second half, but a Christ layup put the Highlanders back up. Marshall added to that lead by outpacing Winthrop's defense as she did all night, blowing by defenders for open layups.

Alyssa Chapman entered the game with around five minutes left in the third quarter and immediately contributed with a made jumper while Kyanna Morgan hit back-to-back threes to give Radford full control and a 45-35 lead. From there on it was all Radford as the team never allowed Winthrop to fully get back in it.

The defense didn't allow a single made field goal until six minutes into the fourth quarter allowing Radford to fully open up the game with a 22-point lead. A pair of Carmen Williams three-pointers built that lead to 60-38 midway through the fourth and from there it was smooth sailing to a 67-50 win.

Inside the box score, Birkhead and Williams finished with double-digit point totals while Johnson and Morgan finished with nine points each. Marshall led the team in assists once again tonight with five while LaLonde had a really strong defensive night with three blocks and four rebounds. The Highlanders also dominated in the paint tonight with 30 of their points coming from there and 29 points coming off the bench.
