Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Highlanders Fall at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford Women's Basketball program fell to Winthrop Saturday afternoon 62-47 despite Bridget Birkhead's 15 points with five made three-pointers.

The Highlanders were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead at the start of the game thanks to Birkhead's first three-pointer of the game. After a 6-2 run by the Eagles, Jackie Christ made a pair of lay ups that would put Radford back out front 7-6. Winthrop was able to retake the lead with some free throws, a lead they would hold until the second half.

The Highlanders were held to just one basket for the rest of the first quarter and trailed 12-9 at the end of the first ten minutes. The second quarter saw a similar chilling of the offense that allowed Winthrop to build up their lead. Radford made a push over the final three minutes, however, capped off by an exciting buzzer-beating three-pointer by Kyanna Morgan that made it 24-23 at the half.

A majority of the Highlanders offense in the third quarter came in the first couple minutes as Birkhead continued her hot shooting from deep with three-straight three-pointers that gave Radford a slim 32-31 lead. The team scored four points over the final seven minutes, though, allowing Winthrop to take a 43-36 lead into the final quarter.

Winthrop built on their lead with a 10-2 run to start the fourth quarter, building up a lead that just became too much. Morgan provided some crucial makes for Radford late in a comeback attempt, but the Eagles held on to eventually win 62-47.

Birkhead was the offensive highlight for the day finishing with 15 points while Morgan also finished with 12 points. Taiye Johnson had a monster defensive game with three blocks, her most in a single game this season. Carmen Williams also dished out a team high three assists on the day.
