Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comeback Attempt at Hampton Falls Short

HAMPTON, Va. – The Radford Women's Basketball program came up just short Tuesday night at Hampton as their comeback attempt over the final six minutes of the game wasn't enough in a 59-53 final.

The opening quarter of Tuesday night's game was a back-and-forth affair between the squads. Radford took the early lead thanks to two quick baskets by Destinee Marshall to start off her quality offensive night. Hampton used the three-ball to jump back in front, but Kyanna Morgan responded with a three of her own to make it a 7-5 Radford lead.

Hampton went on a 4-0 run over the final couple minutes of the quarter, however, allowing them to take a 15-11 lead into the break. That run continued into the second quarter as the Lady Pirates outscored Radford 7-2 in the first five minutes. Taiye Johnson and Morgan were able to break that cold streak, and the Highlanders trailed by just a 27-26 score at the half.

In the third quarter, Hampton was able to outscore Radford 19-10 to take a ten-point lead into the fourth quarter thanks to some strong defense creating offense. At the seven minute mark in the fourth quarter, the Highlanders trailed by their largest deficit of the night at 51-40. Radford refused to go away as Bridget Birkhead hit a pair of threes to pull the team right back into the game.

Ashley Tudor and LaLonde hit back-to-back shots and suddenly the score was at 53-51 with three minutes left in the game. Radford was able to cause some turnovers, but Hampton found their three-point shooting hitting two in the last couple of minutes that allowed them to hold on and win 59-53.

On the night the Highlanders had three players reach double figure point totals. LaLonde led the team with 16 while Birkhead and Marshall both collected 10 points behind four combined three-pointers. Morgan just missed a double-double tonight as she pulled down 10 rebounds and scored nine points.
