NORFOLK, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse team was defeated Saturday, 20-11, by the Old Dominion Monarchs in the first road trip of the 2022 campaign. The loss dropped the Highlanders to 0-2 on the young season.
The Monarchs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Katie Carroll and Margaret Gleason provided two goals in 17 seconds, both off of assists from Ashlyn Grogan, to cut the lead to one. The teams would trade one more goal each to end the first with River Rupert tallying her first of the season on a free position shot right at the end of the period.
It was in the second quarter that Old Dominion took control of the game with an 8-2 margin. Erica Lawrence and River Rupert provided the scoring, but it was not enough as the Highlanders found themselves behind by seven goals at the half.
In the third quarter it was another high-scoring period for Old Dominion while the Highlanders tried to keep pace. River Rupert notched her first career hattrick with a goal and Ashlyn Grogan added a score to go with her two assists. Linley Tirrell had the other goal but it was not enough to overcome six goals by the Monarchs as their lead swelled entering the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter was actually won by Radford 3-2 with Molly O'Brien scoring her first two goals, both on free position shots, and Bella Signorello adding another. In the end, it was not enough as Old Dominion added two more goals for a 20-11 final margin.
