ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Radford baseball team saw their offense stymied as they fell to Winthrop 10-2 in the second game of the weekend series at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Highlanders (8-19, 2-6 Big South) were held to just six hits as a team, and none for extra bases. It was the first time in seven games that Radford had been held without an extra-base knock.
Winthrop (8-18, 3-2 Big South) took control of the game early, scoring four runs in the second inning and adding five in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead. Jonathan Strauss spearheaded the Eagles' efforts, going 1-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run homer in the fourth that gave the home team a 6-0 advantage.
Radford was able to score their only runs of the game in the fifth inning, when catcher
Julian Rojas led off the frame with a single. After a walk to designated hitter
James Taussig and a wild pitch, right fielder
Brendan Bagwell grounded out to short shop as Rojas came in to score.
Center fielder
Cameron Pittman then reached on an infield single to short, driving in Taussig. But that was all the offense Radford could muster, as they had just two hits the rest of the way.
Peyton Reesman was a bright spot for the Highlanders, as the big lefthander tossed five innings allowing two runs and scattering six hits.
Carter Sutton (1-2) earned the win for Winthrop, pitching six innings while surrendering just those two runs in the fifth.
NOTABLE STATS
- Rojas went 2-for-4 with a run.
- Reesman was a workhorse, totaling 91 pitches over his five innings, more than Sutton's 83.
- Only six of the Eagles' 10 runs were earned.
