ROCK HILL, S.C. — Powered by three home runs and 14 hits, the Winthrop offense proved too much to handle as the Radford baseball team dropped an 18-2 decision on Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
The game was close early on, but the Eagles (9-18, 4-2 Big South) broke it open in the third inning when Dillon Morton hit a grand slam to left field. It was the first of two home runs on the day for Morton, who added a two-run blast in the seventh inning as he totaled six RBIs.
Radford (8-20, 2-7 Big South) got a crooked number on the scoreboard when catcher
Julian Rojas sent a double down the left field line in the fourth inning. He then came around to score on a wild pitch to make it a 5-1 game.
After two more Winthrop runs in the home half of the inning, the Highlanders found paydirt again when center fielder
Cameron Pittman singled to center field to drive in first baseman
Ryan Gilmore, cutting the lead to 7-2.
However, that was all the offense Radford could muster on the day, as the Eagles went on to score the final 11 runs of the ball game.
Tyler Jones (1-4) was the victorious pitcher for the home team, tossing five innings and allowing two earned runs.
Zach Davidson (0-2) took the loss for Radford, as he was tagged for seven runs over 3.1 innings of work.
