Hunt's Fine Day Lifts Baseball to Win Over Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. — Starter Will Hunt pitched four scoreless innings, while left fielder Tanner Barrs hit a three-run home run, as the Radford baseball team took down Gardner-Webb 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Hunt recorded four strikeouts and walked only two batters in his start, providing a bridge to the middle innings where Peyton Reesman took the ball in the fifth inning. Reesman was also effective, allowing two runs over 3.1 innings of work while fanning five Gardner-Webb hitters. He was credited with the win, improving his record to 4-1 on the season.

The big blast came in the second inning, when Barrs hit a three-run homer to right field that gave Radford (9-21, 3-8 Big South) a lead that they would not relinquish.

The win certainly did not come easy. In the ninth inning, with Gardner-Webb (11-20, 2-6 Big South) trailing 4-2, Curtis Robison and Pete Capobianco recorded back-to-back singles to start the frame. Ty Burton came in to pitch for Radford, and after issuing a walk, the right-hander was able to induce a groundout to first that scored a run.

Burton then came back from a 3-1 count to strike out Runnin' Bulldogs' DH Nick Capozzi. The ensuing batter, center fielder Benino Mendella, groundout out to third, again on a 3-1 count, to secure the victory for the home team.

Gardner-Webb got their first runs of the game in the fifth inning on a two-RBI single by AJ Jones that cut the deficit to 3-2. But the Highlanders were able to respond in the seventh, getting a much-needed insurance run on a single by second baseman Avery Spencer. The hit sent DH James Taussig from first base to third, and he came around to score on a throwing error by the center fielder.

Tyler Switalski (1-4) took the loss for Gardner-Webb, surrendering three runs and five hits over 5.1 innings.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Burton earned his first save of the season.
  • Right fielder Paul Moore drew three walks.
  • Shortstop Ty Dooley had another multi-hit day, going 2-for-4.
