Women’s Soccer Takes Down Western Carolina for 400th Win in Program History

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's soccer program took down Western Carolina Saturday night 2-0 thanks to a pair of goals by senior Alexeis Kirnos. The win was the 400th in program history for the Highlanders in their 41st season overall.

The Highlanders struck first in their second straight rainy match, getting on the board just five minutes into the game. Kirnos had two incredible goals on the night, and the first was a unique goal that came off a corner kick. With the Highlanders set up looking to score, Kirnos placed a perfect kick that missed everybody and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders defense would hold strong the entire night to preserve that lead. Jordan Phillips had another great night in the net collecting three more saves including a diving block later in the first half. The shutout would be the Highlanders second of the season, with the last coming against another Southern Conference foe Wofford.

In the 37th minute of the game, Kirnos struck again. This time Kirnos set up for a free kick just outside the box and snuck the ball past everybody for her second goal of the night. Kirnos is the first Highlander to have a muti-goal game since Kat Parris did it last season against UNC Asheville.

While the offense cooled down in the second half with the two-goal advantage, the defense did not. Radford looked in control for a majority of the second half to preserve the eventual win. While the Highlanders tied in the shot column with the Catamounts with both teams collecting 11 shots, Radford had the edge in corner kicks with six on the night to Western Carolina's three.

"I thought we played very well tonight," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I was excited about how we defended and got the shutout. I was really happy with the way we possessed the ball tonight and were tactically smart. Western Carolina is a very good program and any time we can get a win against a Southern Conference team we're really excited. Hopefully we can carry this momentum as we get closer to our conference schedule."

The Highlanders will look to keep the winning streak going when they hit the road and face Appalachian State next Thursday, September 15th for their nonconference finale.
