Highlanders Battle Back, Move Unbeaten Streak to Seven Matches Headed Into Conference Play

BOONE, N.C. – The Radford women's soccer program had a rough start to Thursday night's match at Appalachian State, but the team battled back and scored two second half goals for a 2-2 final in enemy territory.

The first 12 minutes of the game were messy, and the Highlanders paid the price with the Mountaineers netting two early goals to gain the big advantage. The Highlanders only had one shot through the opening 20 minutes of the match but would find 14 more before the 90th minute.

Trinity Veras came into the match in the 27th minute and was a vital part of the comeback attempt. Veras saved all three shots on goal that came her way keeping the Mountaineers scoreless over 64 minutes of play.

Radford came out firing in the second half, needing just seven minutes to get their first goal of the night. Kat Parris had space in the box but was tackled drawing the penalty kick attempt. Alexeis Kirnos got the call and made it count, her third straight goal for the Highlanders after winning Big South Player of the Week honors earlier this week.

Needing another goal to at least tie, Radford continued to fight. A corner kick in the 62nd minute didn't find any holes, so Kirnos took another shot at crossing the ball into the box in the 63rd minute and found Lilly Short who placed a perfect a header past the outreaching goalie to make it a 2-2 game.

That result would hold over the final 20 minutes of the game as Radford's comeback attempt may have missed the win but was successful in keeping the team's unbeaten streak alive. The seven straight matches without a loss are the longest streak for Radford since the team won seven straight Big South matches in 2021 on their way to the Big South Tournament Semifinals.

"It was a fun game to be a part of," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I was proud of the team for digging deep and coming back after giving up two early. We look forward to conference preparation and games."

Kirnos and Short both moved their season goal totals to three and two, respectively. The Highlanders were efficient with their shots all night as 10 of their 15 shots were on goal. Radford also lined up for four more corner kicks than Appalachian State. The freshmen Paige Olson and Elyse Beaudry also both had multi-shot nights.

Nonconference play is now in the review mirror. Radford will look to avenge last year's Big South semifinals loss when they host the preseason favorites and last season's Big South regular season champions Campbell at Cupp Stadium next Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
