DAVIDSON, N.C. – Facing a field of stiff competition and a massive course, the Radford men's golf team showed what they're made of with two sub-300 rounds to take sole possession of second place out of 17 teams at the River Run Collegiate.
One of only three teams to shoot in the 280's in either round on Monday, the Highlanders started a bit slow bit made a steady climb throughout the first round and into fourth position. Their second-round showing was even better, going from 295 to 287 (-1) to move two more spots up the team leaderboard.
Bryce Corbett looked like the stud we've come to know during his collegiate career and is just four strokes off the lead at -3, T-4th. The junior carded four birdies and just two bogeys across his first 18 holes and then posted four birdies and three bogeys on his second trip through the course.
Nathan Piatt's strong first impression continues as he shook off a first round 77 to shoot a team-best three-under par 69 in the second round. That second wind performance move him a whopping 45 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 16th at +2. His 10th hole eagle was one of only 10 recorded by the field.
Nicholas Taliaferro brought his signature consistency with him to Davidson, shooting 75 and 74 to sit +5 at the end of the day. He carded a quartet of birdies over two rounds and is tied for 38th.
Joining the list of Highlanders who played even better in the second round than the first was Bobby Dudeck. The Williamsburg product followed his 77 with a 73 and is tied for 42nd.
Suffering from the highs and lows that come with the game of golf, Patrick Gareiss filled his score card with birdies and bogeys alike. He did sink a team-high five birdies in a single round though, bringing his overall score to +8 which is good for T-55th.
Channing Blevins made his 2022-23 season debut as an individual on the day and is tied for 77th at 11-over par.
