Williams Career Night Helps Women’s Basketball Roll Past Winthrop

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's basketball program led from tip to final horn Wednesday night in a dominant victory over Winthrop 74-45. Carmen Williams paced the team all night as she caught fire for a career-high 20 points.

The Highlanders came out firing as Ashlyn Traylor scored five of the first six points with a layup and three-pointer. The Eagles would be held scoreless for almost six minutes before finally breaking through, but Olivia Wagner was right there for an answer with a three-pointer that extended the lead to 9-2.

Ashley Panem added a three-pointer, her ninth straight game scoring from deep, and Williams notched a pair of layups to make it a 20-11 Radford lead at the end of the first quarter. Traylor kept cooking into the second quarter scoring another jumper in the paint while Jackie Christ also got in on the scoring to make it a 24-11 lead.

After a 7-0 run by the Eagles, Trinity Klock halted that run with a put-back. Rachel LaLonde added to her big scoring night with a three-pointer that made it a 31-22 lead with four to go in the quarter. Radford would end the half on a 9-2 run thanks to a three by Wagner and six more paint points. The Highlanders made their presence known all night in the paint and led the Eagles rebounding efforts by nine through the first half.

Radford never let up and continued to stay hot on the offensive end throughout the rest of the game. A Vanessa Blake layup got things started in the second half. Blake would have a quieter scoring night but still managed to come down with a team-high seven rebounds and a season-high in assists (two) and steals (two).

Winthrop would be held to just 10 points in the third quarter as Radford played a stout defense that didn't allow any easy looks for the Eagles. Williams kept the pace nailing her first three-pointer of the game which put Radford up 54-36 headed into the fourth quarter.

The points just kept coming for Williams as she had seven of the team's first 11 points in the fourth quarter. Traylor also was locked in as always providing six points in the final quarter. A three-pointer by Klock in the final minute of play capped off the incredible shooting night for the Highlanders and allowed the team to walk away with the 74-45 win.

WILLIAMS' CAREER NIGHT
Williams refused to miss in tonight's game after hitting eight of the 11 shots she took. Those eight makes from the floor as well as a perfect two-for-two shooting at the free throw line gave Williams the first 20-point performance of her career. Williams is just the fourth player on the active roster to have 20+ points scored in a game. In what's sure to be a night to remember for the sophomore, Williams also excelled with four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

SHOOTING OVER 50%
Radford shot 50% or better in all four quarter of tonight's game. Overall, the team shot 54% from the floor and an impressive 47% from deep with nine three-pointers. The 47% mark from three just misses the team's previous best set against Queens earlier this season where the Highlanders shot 50% from three. Already one of the conference's top shooting teams, the Highlanders added to that tonight with eight different players scoring and three finishing with double-digits.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders are back on the road this weekend as they make their second to last trip into South Carolina this season for a meeting with Charleston Southern. The Highlanders and Buccaneers are set to tip at 2 p.m. streaming on ESPN+.
