POWELL'S POINT, N.C. – A pair of top-10 efforts from
Bryce Corbett and
Bobby Dudeck have the Radford men's golf team in sixth place through 18 holes of this year's ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
With a team-high five birdies, Corbett avoided any major damage throughout the first round and is in 3
rd out of 76 golfers in the field. The Gainesville, Va. product carded birdies on three out of five holes at one point, accomplishing it on holes 8, 9, and 12.
Key to his success was his 4.25 stroke average on Par 5's, which was tied for the very best of any competitor on the course, and contributed a -3 to his overall score.
Dudeck was just behind his teammate thanks to four birdies of his own on the day, putting him in a tie for 9
th at even. He rebounded quickly from bogeys on his first two holes in the morning, and had birdies on holes 11, 12, 14 and 16 to dominate the back nine.
Nicholas Taliaferro returned to the Highlanders' starting lineup and is tied for 34
th at 4-over par. A solid round was sullied a bit by a triple bogey on the 13
th hole, but he too showed a short memory with birdies on the 14
thand 15
th holes to highlight his day.
Patrick Gareiss (T-44
th, +5) and
Nathan Piatt (T-59
th, +8) were also hurt badly by a triple bogey in their trips through the course. Piatt set a positive tone early with a birdie on hole 1, but followed it up with four bogeys and one triple bogey in the rest of his front nine.
Gareiss was looking strong for the vast majority of the day, but added four strokes to his score in his final two holes to bump him down the leaderboard.
Even still, the Highlanders are just four strokes back of the leaders, which are the East Carolina Pirates at +3. Drexel's Griffin Mitchell and SIU Edwardsville's Brady Kaufmann are the lone golfers in front of Corbett thanks to matching scores of -3.
