Radford Remains Perfect at Home in Dominant 4-1 Victory Over UNC Asheville

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program used an electric second half Wednesday night to work a 4-1 victory over UNC Asheville, the team's four straight conference match without a loss.

After a quiet first half saw both teams enter the locker room tied 0-0, the Highlanders would storm out of the locker room in the second half to quickly score three goals in the first 15 minutes.

Leading that charge was senior Amy Swain who made it back-to-back games with goals after a wonderful misdirection. Lilly Short and Paige Olson marched down the field and Olson connected with Swain who shook defenders and the goalie off to her right before placing a perfect shot into the left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.

Radford's next goal came after the offense quickly flipped the field in the 58th minute. Caitlyn Nottingham got her first assist of her career after playing the ball deep down field to Olson. Olson found Eileen Albers, a connection that has been unstoppable lately, for the well-struck goal that made it a 2-0 lead.

Just four minutes later, Radford struck again. And just like the second goal, it was Olson and Albers connecting deep in Bulldog territory to balloon the lead to 3-0. The assist was Olson's third on the night and Albers' fifth goal this season, a team best. After leading the team with six assists in 2022, Olson has shown no signs of slowing down leading the team with eight assists so far this season. Olson is attempting to be the first Highlander to net 10 assists in a season since Nelia Perez did so in 2018. Olson's current assist total is also double the next closest Big South player.

Radford wasn't done yet as their final goal came in the 82nd minute. After UNC Asheville scored to make it a 3-1 game, freshman Jashyra Johnson wasn't content with the Highlanders' lead. Fellow freshman Ava Kertgate dropped a perfect pass to Johnson at the top of the box who put a strong strike past the diving goalie for her first career goal. Johnson is the third Radford freshman to score this season joining Kertgate and Albers.

"I thought the first half we underperformed," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "We asked the team at half time to take it up another level or two and I was very happy with the way we played in the second half. We came out of the locker room ready to play in all facets and scored some beautiful goals. Our forwards especially played well with three different forwards scoring goals and one getting three assists."
