ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Highlanders fall 1-0 against Winthrop in first road conference game.
"Once again another game where we competed hard and played really well at times but didn't get the result we were looking for" said head coach Chris Barrett. "We still have a lot to play for in terms of conference seeding so we turn our attention to a big home game on Wednesday night versus USC Upstate."
The first half of this weekend's game was one where the Highalnder's defense was put to the test. The Winthrop offense was relentless from the first whistle of the game. They were able to get off 11 shots but, the Highlander defense alongside goalkeeper Alex Eydelman kept things scoreless with Eydelman having four saves. The Radford attack was only able to get off one shot by Griffin Gyurci
Second half of today's competition the Highlanders attack showed more life as they got off six shots during the half and while it proved to be threatening to the Winthrop keeper, the Highlanders were unable to capitalize on those chances. The Eagles' Ricardo Ferreira scored the lone goal after Eydelman was able to deflect a shot that bounced and landed in a position that allowed Ferreira to score a tap in to give Winthrop the lead with 22 minutes left in the half. The match from there on was back and forth as the scoreline remained 1-0.
