Turnovers Prove Costly in Opening Loss at Puerto Rico Clasico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Radford women's basketball program dropped their opener at the Puerto Rico Clasico 64-52 against Indiana State Thursday afternoon.

Thursday's contest got off to a solid start for the Highlanders who opened things on a 10-2 scoring run. Olivia Wagner opened the scoring with a three-pointer and after three straight scoreless minutes Ashlyn Traylor-Walker got her impressive game started with a simple layup. Three more points by Ashlyn and a basket by Joi Williams made it a 10-2 lead with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

Indiana State responded with an 11-4 scoring run to finish the first quarter as Radford would hold just a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. The scoring would run dry for the first three minutes of the second quarter allowing the Sycamores to gain a lead. Maci Rhoades hit her first three of the game to end the drought and jump start the offense.

Wagner would hit a three and Rhoades followed with another as the duo went back-to-back-to-back and get Radford back within a point down 24-23. Freshman Terissa Lavoile-Brice hit her first basket on an impressive performance to give Radford the 25-24 lead at the 4:38 mark. Four straight points by Ashlyn would have Radford lead by as much as 29-24, but Indiana State used an 11-0 run to take a commanding 35-29 lead at halftime.

The Highlanders would continue to fight in the second half but just weren't able to go on another big run. Taniya Hanner would briefly tie the game up at 39-all with 3:45 left in the third quarter, but the Sycamores regained the lead shortly after and never relinquished it.

Turnovers and missed free throws would seal the Highlanders fate in the final quarter. The defense allowed just one made shot from the floor over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, but the offensive end struggled to find a groove. As it became a free throw game in the closing minutes, the Sycamores held on for the eventual 64-52 final.
