SERIES HISTORY
Believe it or not, the Highlanders and Monarchs have never played in a regular season contest. They did, however, face each other in the 2014 College Basketball Invitational.
After earning 22 wins, including an upset of Oregon State in the first round of the CBI, Radford's historic season came to a close with an 82-59 defeat to Old Dominion on March 24, 2014.
Javonte Green led the Highlanders with 16 points and 10 rebounds while YaYa Anderson added 11 points and three assists. Richard Ross paced the Monarchs with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
SCOUTING THE MONARCHS
Coming off of a 19-12 (11-7 Sun Belt) season a year ago, Old Dominion was picked to finish third, with one first-place vote, in the 2023-24 Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll. Junior guard Chaunce Jenkins was also voted onto the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team.
The Monarchs are off to a 2-3 start, picking up wins over Virginia Wesleyan and Drexel while falling to Ball State, #14 Arkansas, and Princeton. Defense has been their calling card; they rank 91
st in the nation with a 40.4 defensive field goal percentage, and 28
th in the nation with 10.0 steals per contest.
Jenkins has played as advertised, leading the team with 17.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Senior guard Tyrone Williams has also been excellent to begin the season, posting 13.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest. Freshman guard Vasean Allette looks like the real deal, giving ODU another consistent scorer with 10.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
RULING THE ARC
Whether they're playing offense or defense, the Highlanders have excelled around the three-point arc this season. Through eight games, Radford ranks 42
nd in the nation with a 38.5 three-point percentage and 59
th in the country with a 28.0 three-point field goal percentage defense.
TRUE ROAD GAMES
Radford hops on the team bus once again in search of its first win in an away game this season. The Highlanders are 2-0 at home and 3-0 in neutral site games, but 0-3 in true road contests.
Those three road games have been against extremely tough competition - #19 UNC, VCU, and #24 JMU – so the stats in those games aren't as glowing as the overall season stats. For example, Radford is averaging just 64.3 points per game on the road compared to 75.3 overall this season.
Now 10-25 across 35 road games under Head Coach
Darris Nichols, the Highlanders will look to pick up another hard-fought road win and get on the board in 2023-24.
