Regular Season Begins at Dedmon for Women’s Basketball Against Concord

RADFORD, Va. – The 2023-24 regular season has arrived for the women's basketball program who opens their 52nd season at home against Concord Monday night.

JERSEY NIGHT, T-SHIRT GIVEAWAY
The Sport Jersey Night promotion is in collaboration with the ESHE 360 class on Radford's campus as their semester long project. The class created the promotion, and will oversee all thing's promotion, in game activation, and evaluation. All Radford University students that come and fill out the class survey will receive a free Radford shirt.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Highlanders and Mountain Lions have met six times during the history of both programs with Radford owning the 6-0 lead in the series. Radford has faced Concord twice during the McGuire era, last playing on December 31st, 2016. Radford won decisively 78-51 led by four Highlanders recording double digit points including Destinee Walker, Jayda Worthy, Claudia Quevedo and Janayla White.
 
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
Concord enters 2023-24 under the helm of Tesla Southcott in her second season. The Mountain Lions were selected to finish sixth in the Mountain East preseason poll after posting a 14-17 overall and 9-13 conference record last season.

The Mountain Lions top-scorer from last season, sophomore Abbie Smith, returns after averaging 13.5 ppg in her debut season. Smith shot 55% on the season and was later named to the MEC's second-team. Plenty of experience will join Smith including graduates Nakaila Gray and Alexis Phillips as well as senior Maddie Ratcliff with the trio amassing over 70 games played last season.
 
PRESEASON TUNE-UP
Radford looked strong in their preseason exhibition with Bridgewater Thursday night as the team cruised to a 77-40 victory in the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders saw four players tally 10+ points while dominating the turnover game with just seven turnovers on the night. The team shot a solid 48% on the night with a solid 37% mark from three-point range.
 
PRESEASON AWARDS
The Highlanders were selected to finish tied for second with Presbyterian among the nine Big South institutions. Radford has now been placed in the top-five of the Big South preseason poll in seven of their last 10 preseason polls. Sophomore Ashlyn Traylor-Walker was named to the preseason first team after a record-breaking first season with Radford. Her 405 points and 13.1 ppg were best on the team and ranked top-five in the Big South. The newcomer became the first freshman at Radford to total 400 points and 100 assists in their debut season.
