Women’s Basketball Triumphs in Dominant Victory Over Liberty

LYNCHBURG, VA. – The Radford women's basketball program had their best defensive performance of the season as they took down in-state and former conference rival Liberty 57-45 Wednesday night.

After Liberty briefly reclaimed the lead heading into the fourth quarter, Radford buckled down and held the Flames to zero made shots from the floor over the final eight minutes of play going on a 14-0 run over that span to seal the victory.

Early on in the meeting, Radford made their presence known as Ashlyn Traylor-Walker, Terissa Lavoile-Brice and Taniya Hanner all got their strong nights started fueling a 6-2 run over the first three minutes. Ashlyn and Hanner combined for eight of the Highlanders' 12 first quarter points as the two teams would remain deadlocked through the first ten minutes.

In the second quarter, Radford kept their defensive intensity high to give themselves some space. Liberty was held to just eight points in the second quarter as Radford got threes from Joi Williams and Olivia Wagner to ignite the offense. A 5-0 run sparked the second quarter as Lavoile-Brice and Williams combined for Radford's biggest lead at that point.

Lavoile-Brice started another brief run as Wagner followed her hook shot with a three-pointer that put Radford up 23-14 at the 5:38 mark in the second quarter. Second chance layups were a primary source of offense by the Flames all night and they used that rebounding margin to keep things close 25-20 at halftime.

More than happy with a 25-20 lead halfway home, Radford looked to keep up the fight. Liberty punched back with their best quarter of the night with 20 points in the third quarter that gave them their first lead of more than two points since the opening quarter. Ashlyn kicked off another impressive second half performance with six points in the third quarter, four from the free throw line, to keep the deficit at just 39-40.

Digging deep, the defense delivered. Radford delivered a resounding, dominant fourth quarter outscoring the Flames 18-5 with the Flames going scoreless for almost an entire eight minutes. Ashlyn finished strong with 11 more points to eclipse 20 on the game while Wagner also came up with two huge shots that built Radford's lead.

With under two minutes remaining and up 51-42, it became a free throw game and Ashlyn led the way hitting five of six free throws to keep the Flames at bay. The score went final 57-45, and Radford was able to pick off the Flames for their biggest victory of the still-young season snapping an eight-game skid.
