Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense Paves Way to Dominant 62-46 Win Over Queens

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program was victorious for the second straight game Sunday afternoon as the team's defense held the Royals to sub-50 points to the tune of a 62-46 victory.

Freshman Terissa Lavoile-Brice just missed her second career double-double with a physical performance in the paint. The newcomer tallied nine points, all in the second half, and 12 rebounds which is also just shy of her career-high 13. Not stopping there, Lavoile-Brice also tied her single-game career-best in assists with three.

The Highlanders practically led start to finish against Queens holding the advantage for over 35 minutes of the contest. The defense showed up early, holding the Royals scoreless over the first three minutes as Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker got her strong showing going by scoring Radford's first five points.

After a deep two from Olivia Wagner had Radford up 10-7 with 3:48 left in the quarter, the Royals went on a 6-2 run to briefly take their only lead of the game. Freshman Joi Williams made sure that lead was short lived as she knocked down a contested three with 20 seconds left in the quarter making it a 15-14 Radford advantage.

The Highlanders offense and defense looked unbreakable early in the second quarter quickly building a seven-point lead thanks to a 6-0 run fueled by a pair of layups from Ashlyn Traylor-Walker. The Royals didn't get their first second quarter points until the 6:33 mark where they proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to tie things back up at 21-all with 3:50 left in the half.

Stopping that run was Wagner, who had just come off the bench after suffering a hard hit in the first quarter that put her on the sideline. Wagner's three-pointer gave Radford the lead they'd never relinquish the rest of the way. Another three-pointer by Maci Rhoades ensured a commanding 29-22 lead going into the halftime break.

As was the theme of the day, it was the defense who came out of the locker room strong allowing Radford to build its biggest lead of the day. A stout Highlander defense held Queens scoreless until the 3:24 mark in the third quarter as the team went on a 9-0 run with made shots from Ashlyn, Wagner, Lavoile-Brice and Pa'Shence.

After that scoreless stretch had Radford out front 38-22 for their largest lead of the day, the Royals offense came alive for 11 points over the final three minutes. The offensive spurt kept Queens right in the thick of it heading into the final quarter with Radford up 45-33.

The offensive run continued as Queens quickly put up four points until an Ellie Taylor three-pointer halted the 8-2 run. Another three-pointer by Pa'Shence gave Radford a 51-39 lead with 7:30 remaining but the offense would go cold until just three minutes remained. The defense collected multiple crucial stops to hold Queens to just four points from the seventh to third minute of the quarter.

Despite foul trouble keeping Ashlyn contained for most of the second half, the sophomore came up with the back-breaking three with 2:58 left in the game that put Radford up 54-43. Lavoile-Brice, who had contributed a big five points in the third quarter, finished strong hitting a pair of free throws and another layup for her ninth points leading Radford to the 62-46 win.
