Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Miscues Plague Highlanders at College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford women's basketball program fell in a tough game Thursday afternoon 74-50 at College of Charleston despite a strong start.

The Highlanders went punch-for-punch with the Cougars over about the first 16 minutes of play as both teams traded leads. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker caught fire early on hitting a three-pointer to open the scoring. Joi Williams and Terissa Lavoile-Brice joined in with made layups to give Radford a 7-5 lead at the 5:58 mark.

Another three-pointer and made driving layup by Ashlyn helped Radford pull ahead further but the high energy offense of the Cougars wasn't held quiet long. Three straight three-pointers saw the Cougars pull ahead 17-14 before the first quarter closed.

Radford punched back in the second quarter bursting for an 11-1 run to reclaim an advantage. Taniya Hanner joined the scoring fun while Maci Rhoades sunk a pair of free throws to go immediately back out front 19-16. Ashlyn sunk another two shots to pull ahead by as much as 23-17 with 6:09 left in the half.

From there, though, scoring woes hit the Highlanders as College of Charleston went on a 19-4 run over the final six minutes of the half primarily scoring off turnovers to take a commanding 36-27 lead into halftime.

Radford broke through for a brief scoring run to start the second half, but the shots kept landing for College of Charleston as the deficit ballooned. Williams and Hanner combined for nine of the 11 third quarter points as Radford trailed 59-38.

Ellie Taylor would strike for seven points in the final frame, but the Cougars wouldn't relent in their scoring attack to pull away for the eventual 74-50 final.

NOTABLES
  • The pair of three-pointers were a positive sign for Ashlyn as it marked a single-game high as she hit 50% of her attempts from deep.
  • Due to injuries Radford asked a lot from its bench today as Joi Williams earned her first career start and Reniya Jones set a season-high 23 minutes played
  • Hanner recorded the first double-double of her career with 13 rebounds and 12 points. The 13 rebounds shatters a previous career best of nine rebounds.
