Baseball Drops Pair to Wagner on Friday

RADFORD, Va. — The Radford baseball team dropped a split doubleheader to Wagner on Friday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium, falling 7-3 in game one and 11-2 in game two.

GAME ONE
In the opener, second baseman Zack Whitacre got the scoring started early, as he drove in Cameron Pittman with an RBI groundout in the first inning. Later in the second, Radford (2-4) struck for two runs, as catcher Garrett Pancione collected an RBI on a groundout, followed by an RBI single from Miles LeVere, his first hit and RBI of the season.

But Wagner (2-3) had the response, scoring three runs in the third inning and adding two more in the sixth. Ryan Bilka earned the win for the Seahawks, pitching 4.1 innings of shutout ball.

The Highlanders did receive three shutout innings from their bullpen, as freshman Collin Williams came on in relief, tossing a scoreless seventh in his collegiate debut. Righthander Ty Burton followed that up with a pair of scoreless innings himself.

Pittman was the most productive hitter at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run and a walk, reaching base safely in all of his plate appearances. First baseman Tanner Barrs also added a pair of hits.

GAME TWO
After no score through the first three innings, Wagner struck first in game two thanks to a three-run double by DiMaggio Cazares in the fourth. In the home half of the frame, Radford put together a rally in response. Shortstop Avery Spencer had a two-out RBI single that scored catcher Julian Rojas, while LeVere checked in with another run driven in, this time a double that allowed Spencer to trot home.

But that was all the Highlanders could muster offensively, as they were held in check by the Wagner pitching staff over the final five innings, collecting only one hit. Connor Hayden was the winning pitcher for the Seahawks, allowing one hit and no earned runs across 3.1 innings of work. Starter Dylan Howard took the loss for Radford.
