Softball Falls in Final Day of Pirate Clash

GREENVILLE, N.C. –The Radford softball program fell in a pair of tight games Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Pirate Clash. Radford and Saint Francis (PA) came together in another pitcher's duel in the morning meeting, but Radford fell 2-1. The tournament hosts used a lone big inning in the afternoon game to hold on and defeated Radford 6-4.

Game 1
In the first game of the day Malorie Reeves got the start for the Highlanders and the freshman was impressive once again despite not getting the win today. After giving up a run in the first inning, Reeves locked things down the rest of the way.

Radford got the offense going in the second inning as Laura Thompson drew a walk and advanced all the way to third with two outs. Kari Shedrick stepped up big and her hot bat tripled in Thompson to tie the game at one-all. Shedrick's triple was Radford's first since May 13th, 2021.

The Highlanders would mount another attack in the fifth inning. Cassi Barbato led off the inning with a single and Kyndall Stanley came in to pinch run for her. Rachel Smith laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Stanley to second with just one out. Thompson and Shedrick walked to load the bases, but Saint Francis got the final out to end the threat.

Radford wasn't able to get the offense moving the rest of the way, and Saint Francis took advantage after loading the bases with one out in the seventh to walk off the game 2-1.

Game 2
In game two Radford fell after a tough second inning with a comeback in the top of the seventh that came up just short. After a quiet first inning for both teams, Radford struck first in the second. Taylor Trent started her big game with a double and Emily Smith followed her with another double for the 1-0 lead.

East Carolina would take advantage of five walks and a hit by pitch in the bottom of the second inning to score all six of their runs in the game, however. Chloe Greene entered the game in relief and played a huge part in keeping the Pirates at bay and Radford close for a comeback.

That comeback would come in the seventh inning as Radford started the late comeback. Emily Smith and Barbato began the inning with walks to start the rally. After a wild pitch, both advanced to second and third.

Rachel Smith singled in Emily Smith to make it just a 6-2 deficit. Laura Thompson was able to drive in Stanley with a sacrifice fly to make it just 6-3. With two outs and the bases loaded, Trent stayed hot singling in Rachel Smith to make it just a two-run game with the bases still loaded. The comeback attempt would stall out there, however, as East Carolina held on to win 6-4.
