Comeback Victory Highlights Day Two at James Madison Tournament

HARRISONBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program split their two games in day two of their tournament at James Madison this weekend highlighted by a 6-2 comeback victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.

Game 1
Radford had another early morning in the first game of the day getting going at 9:30 a.m. against Fairleigh Dickinson. In theme with the early start, Radford didn't waste time getting the bats going.

Right away as the first batter of the game Laura Thompson singled to center field. After an error, Thompson turned on the jets and sped her way across the basepaths all the way home for the early 1-0 lead.

Freshman Natalie Jones got the starting nod and was flawless through the first two innings. The Knights picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but the Highlanders didn't back down. Radford would get those two runs back and retake the lead in the fourth.

After Taylor Trent reached by an error, Rachel Smith picked up her first big hit of the game tripling in Trent to tie the game. Emily Smith followed her with a sacrifice fly that put Radford back out front 3-2.

After four strong innings by Jones, Emily Spingarn took over in the fifth inning with two runners on and none out. Spingarn didn't falter, retiring three straight batters to preserve the lead. Radford would get some insurance in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth inning, Cori McMillan led off with a single and R. Smith notched her second triple of the morning to extend the lead. A single by E. Smith scored R. Smith, and Radford led 5-2. In the seventh inning Radford took advantage of another Knights error as Kari Shedrick doubled in Thompson for the 6-2 lead and eventual final score.

Game 2
Radford's second game of the day featured an onslaught of offense by both squads. One bad inning would prove too big a hole to climb out of, however, as Saint John's won the rematch of the two teams 11-5.

After a scoreless first inning by Ellen Palya, Radford would take an early lead thanks to Cassi Barbato who singled in McMillan. Up 1-0, Spingarn, who entered the game in the second inning, pitched another scoreless frame in the third.

A seven-run fourth inning by the Hawks would prove costly as it gave the opponents the edge they'd need for the rest of the game. McMillan picked up another RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the 7-2 deficit. The Hawks would score four more in the fifth inning to pull further ahead 11-2.

Refusing to go down in a shortened game, Radford stormed back for a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first five Highlanders all reached base as Lexie Roberts drew a walk, Thompson singled, Wilson singled and R. Smith reached on an error that scored a run. Qween Edmonds stepped up with the bases loaded and picked up her first RBI with a single up the middle. After all was said and done, Radford trailed 11-5 in their comeback attempt.

Jones pitched in relief for the Highlanders after starting in the first game of the day and tossed 2.2 scoreless inning. Radford's offense wasn't able to cross home plate past the fifth inning though, as Saint Joseph's held on for the 11-5 final.
