Freshmen Firepower Pushes Highlanders to Doubleheader Split with Catamounts

CULLOWHEE, N.C. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader with Western Carolina Wednesday afternoon thanks to an offensive outburst totaling 11 runs across the two games. Radford fell in game one 10-4 but held on to win the second game in dramatic fashion 7-6.

Game 1
The Highlanders fell victim to a bad inning midway through the first game despite a competitive start in a comeback attempt. After the Catamounts scored four runs in the first couple innings, Natalie Jones buckled down and kept the opponents at bay to allow for the comeback.

Cori McMillan got the fourth inning going with another hit and after stealing second with two outs, Rachel Smith double her home to cut into the deficit 4-1. Abby Wilson pitched in, singling to center to cut the lead in half 4-2.

Foster Sharpe would lead off the fifth inning with a double as Radford attempted to claw back. Jones stepped up to the plate with an opportunity to help her own cause and did just that. Jones crushed her first home run of her career to center to tie the game at four-all.

The bottom of the fifth bounced the Catamounts way, however, as they were able to plate six runs and take a 10-4 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Emily Spingarn came in to pitch the final couple of frames and held the Catamounts scoreless. But it wouldn't be enough as Radford fell in the 10-4 final.

Game 2
Radford kept the offensive momentum from game one going into game two and put the loss in the review mirror for a total turnaround. Two freshmen, Qween Edmonds and Natalie Moya, would get starts in the second game and both would leave their mark.

After a scoreless first inning including a pair of strikeouts by Palya, Radford struck for their first run in the second inning. Kari Shedrick began the inning with a single and a sacrifice bunt by Laura Thompson quickly moved her to second. Lexie Roberts snuck a double to center and some aggressive baserunning by Shedrick earned Radford the early 1-0 advantage.

After a scoreless bottom half of the second including two more strikeouts by Palya, both teams didn't score in the third inning. Radford's offense had its biggest inning of the day in the fourth that helped mount their biggest lead of the day as well.

Abby Wilson, Thompson and Roberts all began the inning with singles to load the bases with just one out. The freshman Edmonds stepped up and delivered her first key moment of the game with a double down the right field line that cleared the bases and made it a 4-0 lead. Moya followed suit and singled home Edmonds for her first RBI of the season that made it 5-0 Radford.

The Catamounts didn't go down easily as they struck back for four runs in the bottom half of the inning to tighten things up. With the bases loaded, Malorie Reeves entered the game and got the final out to preserve the lead.

For some much-needed insurance, the Highlanders got back to work in the fifth. Cori McMillan continued her hot streak with a single to lead off the inning, and scored off Shedrick's second hit of the game to give Radford some more breathing room with a 6-4 lead. Reeves would continue to cruise until the final inning where Radford would add some more run support.

McMillan singled once again and after a walk by Wilson Radford was in scoring position. Thanks to a throwing error by the Catamounts, McMillan was able to race her way home to make it a 7-4 advantage for the Highlanders. The Catamounts would have one more comeback attempt stored up for the final frame.

After the first two batters reached with none out, Chloe Greene entered the game looking for her first career save. With the bases loaded and none out, Greene induced a double play to ease some nerves. Trailing just 7-6, the Catamounts had two runners on with just one out to go. The Catamounts seemingly had that hit, but Edmonds came flying in for a diving grab to record the final out and prevent extra innings.

UP NEXT
Radford finally returns home for the first time in 20 games as they will open up a three-game Big South series against Charleston Southern this Friday, March 31st.
