Highlanders Come Up Short in Back-and-Forth Game Against Buccaneers

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program came up just short in a back-and-forth game against Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon in a 5-4 final score.

Malorie Reeves got the starting nod for the Highlanders and despite a pair of early runs, navigated through trouble all afternoon with ease. After a scoreless first three innings by the Highlanders offense, the home squad started their comeback attempt in the fourth.

Cori McMillan recorded a hit to start the inning, her ninth straight game with a hit, and a Kari Shedrick bunt moved her into scoring position. Rachel Smith placed a single up the middle perfectly to score McMillan and cut into the deficit. The team-leader in RBIs Abby Wilson followed her up with a similar soft single up the middle that scored Smith and tied the game.

Charleston Southern would strike back for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth but the offensive momentum didn't slow down. Emily Smith wasted no time in the bottom of the fifth crushing the first pitch she saw for a home run over the left field fence, her third of the season.

Natalie Jones, who entered the game in the top of the fifth, kept the Buccaneers scoreless in the sixth which would allow the Highlanders to tie things up again in the bottom half of the inning. This time the lead-off home run came off the bat of Shedrick to tie it at four-all. It was Shedrick's first home run with the Highlanders and it was an absolute moonshot, clearing the outfield trees with ease.

The Buccaneers would scratch across a run in the top of the seventh, however, to mark their 5-4 lead that would hold until the final.
