Campbell Tops Radford in Big South Opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After a pair of victories to conclude its non-conference schedule, the Radford University women's lacrosse team traveled to Campbell University on Wednesday evening to open Big South play. After a tightly-contested first few minutes, the game went scoreless for nearly half of regulation. The Fighting Camels found life in the second half, ultimately earning the 15-4 victory.

The two squads traded early goals as both teams scored in the opening three minutes. After Campbell took the lead, Margaret Gleason scored to level the contest. The hosts then scored four of the next five goals to end the opening frame. Erica Lawrence's goal near the end of the period helped pull one back for the visitors, but Campbell held a 6-2 advantage after the first quarter.

No goals were scored in the second frame as the Fighting Camels maintained their four-goal lead at the halftime break. After nearly 28 minutes of scoreless lacrosse, Ashlyn Grogan scored off a feed from Reece Morrish to pull the Highlanders back within three. Campbell then scored three consecutive goals in less than a minute to extend their cushion to six goals. The scoring run was pushed to four by the end of the third quarter as Campbell held a 10-3 lead going into the final 15 minutes of play.

Campbell continued its scoring run into the fourth quarter, scoring nine of the last ten goals of the contest. Radford's final-period strike came from Linley Tirrell, who scored her tenth goal of the campaign.

Grogan led the Highlanders with one goal and one assist. Gleason, Lawrence and Tirrell all joined the scoresheet as well. Reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week Olivia Hunter continued her stellar form; the Mechanicsville, Va. native tallied a season-high 18 saves.
