Jones Tosses Shutout as Highlanders Split First Day at Liberty Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program split their games in the opening day of the Liberty Invitational Saturday afternoon picking up a 1-0 victory over Iona before falling 8-0 to UConn.

Game 1
The first game of the day featured a pitcher's duel between the Highlanders and the Gaels. Freshman Natalie Jones dazzled by tossing her first career shutout that led the team to the eventual win.

The Highlanders would only get a pair of hits in the contest, but it would be all they needed. In the bottom of the fifth inning Cori McMillan led things off with a single. Abby Wilson stepped up to the plate and did what she does best knocking an RBI double to center to give Radford the 1-0 edge.

Thanks to Jones, Radford was set. The freshman was dealing and only faced resistance in the final inning. Iona got two straight hits with just one out to start the top of the seventh. After a third straight hit the Gaels threatened to score but an incredible play kept the lead in tact. Lexie Roberts in center nabbed the runner at home plate. Jones was able to get the final out right after that to seal the 1-0 win.

Game 2
The second game of the day wouldn't go the Highlanders' way as they ran into a tough UConn squad that grabbed an 8-0 victory. Malorie Reeves tossed a scoreless first two innings for the Highlanders.

After three runs by the Huskies in the third, Radford got a rally going thanks to a Roberts double and a Kari Shedrick walk. Two straight outs would end the threat, however, and a five runs in the next two innings would seal the game for UConn.
