Electric Start Not Enough in Doubleheader at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program fell in a couple of tough games Sunday afternoon at Liberty to finish their weekend at the Liberty Invitational. Radford fell in the first game with a 14-6 final score and 12-2 final score in game two.

Game 1
The first game of the day featured an electrification of the Highlanders' offense that exploded out to an early lead over the weekend hosts Liberty. After a scoreless first inning by starter Emily Spingarn, the Radford offense caught fire in the top of the second inning.

After an error put Emily Smith on first base, Smith moved to second on a passed ball. Foster Sharpe placed a perfect hit down the left field line for a double that scored Smith and made it 1-0 Radford.

Later on in the inning with the bases loaded and just one out Kari Shedrick got her first big hit of the day singling through the left side to make it 2-0 Radford. Spingarn would dial up another scoreless inning in the bottom of the second allowing Radford to add to its lead in the third inning.

Abby Wilson got the inning started with a single down the right field line. With runners on second and third, Rachel Smith laced a triple down the right field line to score both Smith and Kyndall Stanley giving Radford a 4-0 lead.

To add to that lead Lexie Roberts would single in Smith to make it 5-0. Capping off the four-run inning was Taylor Trent who muscled a single to center field that scored Laura Thompson. Liberty would strike back hard in the bottom half of the third inning, however, scoring seven unanswered runs to take their first lead 7-6.

After a handful of runs in the fourth inning, Liberty struck again in the fifth inning for four more runs to end the game with a 14-6 final score. Radford would quickly turn its focus to game two and try to keep the bats hot.

Game 2
The second game of the day featured another close battle through the early innings despite a late rally by the Flames eventually pulling things away. After a couple early runs by Liberty, Radford would get the bats going again in the third inning.

R. Smith singled to start the inning and Roberts quickly followed her with another hit. After a Thompson single, the bases were loaded with none out. Shedrick kept the line moving once again with a strong single to left field to break the shutout. Cori McMillan would advance another runner home so that Radford only trailed 5-2. After a scoreless third inning, Liberty chipped away for the eventual 12-2 final score that ended the game in the fifth inning.
