HUNTINGTON, W.V. — Second baseman
Sully Tibbs drove in two runs, but the Highlander pitching staff was unable to contain Marshall as they fell to the Thundering Herd 11-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Kennedy Center Field.
Tibbs was responsible for both of Radford's runs. In the fourth inning, the freshman got Radford (5-8) on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored third baseman
Bannon Brazell. In the seventh, following a leadoff triple by
Zack Mallia, Tibbs drove in his second run with a single to right field.
The Highlanders went with a staff day on the mound, using six different pitchers. Righthander
Clay Clatterbaugh provided much-needed respite for the bullpen, pitching three scoreless innings from the sixth to the eighth while allowing just one earned run.
Marshall (5-8) got off to a quick start, scoring six runs in the first inning. Highlighted the Herd's offensive atttack was Kyle Schaefer, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
Mallia turned in a productive day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
KEY STATS
- Designated hitter Julian Rojas continues to swing a hot bat. He hit a double in the ninth inning, extending his hitting streak to five games.
- After getting two outs in the bottom of the third, RHP Ty Burton reclaimed the national lead in games pitched, making his 10th appearance of the season.
