Thrilling Afternoon of Softball Ends in Doubleheader Split for Highlanders

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program had an exciting day at the Radford Softball Stadium Saturday afternoon. Game one featured a walk-off victory for the Highlanders, 6-5, while game two went into extras before Radford fell in the ninth inning 3-2.

Game 1
The resilient Highlanders battled from behind in most of the first game but never backed down. After a scoreless first by freshman Chloe Greene, the Spartans struck for a trio of runs in the top of the second. Radford would go straight to work in the bottom half of the inning.

Rachel Smith brought her hot hitting into the weekend series and led off the bottom of the second with a single. Smith stole second and would advance to third with two outs in the inning. Foster Sharpe had the timely hit, singling up the middle to score Smith.

After USC Upstate added another run in the third to go up 4-1, Radford again responded in the bottom half. With two outs in the inning, Abby Wilson kept things alive with a walk and another walk by Smith put her in scoring position. Kari Shedrick had the two-out RBI this time as she singled up the middle to score Wilson and make it just a 4-2 deficit.

USC Upstate would again tag on one run in the top of the fifth to go back up 5-2, but once again it was Radford who had the final say in the inning. This time the Highlanders lit up for more than just a lone run.

Laura Thompson led off the inning with a double and Cori McMillan immediately followed her with another double to make it a 5-3 game. After a heroic home run earlier in the week, Smith made it two-straight games going deep for the Highlanders with a huge game-tying two-run homer to make it five-all.

After scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh innings thanks to Greene, Radford needed some magic headed into the bottom of the seventh. Game one of the weekend series marked the 14th time the two teams had met and the Highlanders had only ever won once before in the series history.

That win came back in April of 2021 with Abby Wilson being the only Highlander on the field who played in that game and in today's game. With one out in the seventh it was Wilson who stepped up to bat. She took the second pitch she saw and deposited it over the right field wall for Radford's second straight walk off win.

Game 2
In the second game of the day both squads were neck and neck the entire way until the Spartans pulled away late. Freshman Malorie Reeves took to the circle in game two and was phenomenal once again for the Highlanders.

After a scoreless first two innings by Reeves, USC Upstate used the long ball again to take a slim 1-0 lead in the third. That lead wouldn't stand for long as Radford, doing what they did all afternoon, struck back in the fourth.

Wilson led off the inning with a walk and a single by Shedrick moved her into scoring position. Roberts came up big once again for the Highlanders, singling up the middle to score Wilson and tie the game at one-all.

Both pitchers continued to duel as nobody broke through for six innings in the 1-1 game. USC Upstate took the lead in the top of the seventh, but Radford wasn't done just yet. After two outs started the seventh, Radford rallied. McMillan singled setting up for Wilson to play hero once again. The senior hero did just that, crushing a double right center that scored McMillan and tied the game back up at two-all.

In extra innings, Reeves continued to deal posting a scoreless eighth. A tight play at the plate proved the difference as USC Upstate took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth that would hold during the final frame for the 3-2 final.
