RADFORD, Va. — On a day in which Radford honored their nine seniors, the Highlander baseball team fell to Presbyterian 13-7 on Senior Day at Carter Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In a similar fashion to Friday's game, the Highlanders (10-45, 2-25 Big South) were hot early, scoring the first six runs of the ballgame. In the second inning, right fielder
Paul Moore came through with a two-RBI single to give Radford a 3-0 lead.
His fellow senior
Zack Whitacre would follow up with an RBI base hit to extend the advantage. It was part of a 3-for-5 day for the Short Gap, W.V. native.
In the third, second baseman
Bannon Brazell dunked a fly ball into right center for a double that scored catcher
Julian Rojas. Moore then came through again, singling through the right side for another RBI and a 6-0 lead.
Radford starter
Ty Burton retired the first nine Presbyterian hitters before being pushed out of the game in the fifth inning. The Blue Hose (21-34, 12-15) mounted a sustained rally, plating seven runs in the fifth and tacking on four more in the late innings.
Brazell would drive in another thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, but the Highlanders left the bags full and could do no further damage.
In a fitting tribute, Radford's five seniors in the lineup — Whitacre, Rojas, Moore,
Ryan Gilmore, and
Tanner Barrs — combined to hit 9-for-22 and four RBI, each with a base hit. It was another productive day at the dish for Moore, who went 2-for-4 with three runs driven in, as he ended the year on a three-game hitting streak.
Kyle Mueller was the winning pitcher for Presbyterian, pitching 3.2 scoreless innings. Burton was tabbed with the loss.
The series concludes the Highlanders' 2023 campaign, as the top four teams in the conference qualified for the Big South Tournament in High Point, N.C.
