RADFORD, Va. — The Winthrop Eagles used a seven-run seventh inning to break open what was once a pitcher's duel, as the Radford baseball team fell to Winthrop by a 10-2 final on Friday evening.
The Highlanders (9-37, 1-18 Big South) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, when second baseman
Sully Tibbs reached on a fielding error by the Winthrop third baseman, allowing
Avery Spencer to score and knot the game up at 1-apiece.
In the fourth inning, Tibbs once again found himself in a run-scoring play, punching an RBI groundout to second base that plated
Bannon Brazell for a 2-1 lead.
Winthrop (22-22, 10-9) broke the game open in the seventh, scoring seven runs to take the lead. Left fielder Jonathan Strauss was 3-for-5 with two RBI for the visitors.
The rally spoiled an otherwise commendable start for RHP
Dylan Howard, who went 6.1 innings and struck out five Eagle hitters, walking none. Dyson Johnson earned the win for Winthrop, pitching a scoreless sixth inning.
Unfortunately, Radford found hits hard to come by, as they were held to just four base knocks on the evening. DH
Austin Stalker went 1-for-3 with a walk in the loss.
