Softball Season Ends in Close Loss at Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program fell in another close one Saturday afternoon 4-2 at Gardner-Webb in the regular season finale.

Radford would have a scoring opportunity early after a Gardner-Webb error got the speedy Lexie Roberts on base to lead off the game. Roberts would steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch but was left stranded.

After a scoreless first by Chloe Greene, Radford got a pair of baserunners again in the second thanks to Kyndall Stanley and Qween Edmonds but couldn't get the runners home. Gardner-Webb struck for a run in the bottom of the second and for two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 3-0.

Radford would strike back in the top of the fourth thanks to back-to-back doubles to start the inning by Abby Wilson and Rachel Smith. Smith would get to third but was stranded there to keep it a 3-1 game.

Ellen Palya entered the game in relief in the bottom of the fourth. After two quick outs, Gardner-Webb got some timely hitting with two outs to make it a 4-1 lead headed into the back-half of the contest. Palya settled in, though, and would toss two more scoreless innings in relief to keep Radford close.

Needing a rally, Radford got to work in the top of the seventh. Roberts added another hit to her impressive freshman campaign and a Laura Thompson walk had Radford in business. A sacrifice fly by Cori McMillan would make it a 4-2 game but that's all the Highlanders would get as it came down to a 4-2 final.
