RADFORD, Va. – Sophomore defender
Owen Clark scored his first career goal as the Radford men's soccer team drew, 1-1, with Mount St. Mary's at Cupp Stadium on Tuesday night.
"I was really pleased with our attitude and effort tonight," said Head Coach
Chris Barrett. "I thought we created enough chances to win the game. We are young team and still learning our way. I'm really excited for the potential and future of this group. We definitely have a lot of things to improve on but I thought we were in control of the game tonight and gave ourselves a chance to win many times in the second half."
The Highlanders (0-1-1) were raring to go straight out of the locker room, putting heavy pressure on the Mountaineers (0-1-1) from the jump. With just 5:34 ticked off the clock,
Jan Maldonado stepped up to take a free kick from five yards beyond the top of the box.
His service found the head of
Alex Kryazhev, who sent the ball right into the path of Clark who made no mistake and opened the scoring.
Although both defenses stood strong on the night, Radford's effort looked especially stout. There was only one true lapse all game.
In the 18
th minute, The Mount played the ball into its attacking third and berated the home side with shot after shot and cross after cross. The Highlanders tried to clear it several times, but were unable to and the visitors took advantage as Ammit Bhogal leveled the match.
Radford earned 10 corners to Mount St. Mary's three, but no matter how many set pieces they worked out, the team just couldn't find the go-ahead goal.
Team captain
Jan Maldonado was one of the most dangerous players on the field all night, leading everyone with four shot attempts, including one on frame.
