SAPPHIRE, N.C. – The first and second rounds couldn't have gone more differently as the Radford men's golf team ends the first day of the JT Poston Invitational in sixth out of 16 teams.
Coming off a tournament win at the River Run Collegiate to open the season, the Highlanders looked just as strong in their first 18 holes at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Following the first round, Radford owned sole possession of first place, besting the rest of the field by four strokes.
Coach Grant's squad came back down to Earth in the second round however, following up a first-round 273 with a 293. Radford now trails Drexel (-11) by nine strokes going into Tuesday's final round.
Patrick Gareiss shined across all 36 holes, shooting a career best-tying 66 in the first round and a 70 in the second round to tie for 5
th at -6. The Chesapeake, Va. native carded eight birdies and two eagles, both of which came in an astonishing three-hole span on the first round back nine.
The only Highlander to shoot lower the second time through the course was Nick Taliaferro, who followed up a 73 with a 70 to end the day at 1-over par. He climbed 20 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 33
rd.
Nathan Piatt (T-45
th) was excellent en route to a 3-under par 69 in the first round, while
Bobby Dudeck (T-59
th) went 70-76 to finish the day just one shot behind his teammate.
Bryce Corbett continued his hot start to the season with a 2-under par 69 in the first round, but an uncharacteristic 79 in the second round has him tied for 71
st.
