Kertgate and Cowden Set Career Firsts as Highlanders Blow Past Lady Pirates

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program grabbed a Labor Day weekend victory Sunday night over Hampton 5-0 as Ava Kertgate and Audrey Cowden scored their first career goals. The defense also continues to shine as they posted their third straight shutout.

The Highlanders were aggressive early in Sunday's meeting which would lead to an early advantage. A defensive miscue by the Lady Pirates resulted in an own goal in the 15th minute to give Radford a 1-0 lead. Radford would record three shots and two corners in the first 15 minutes as the squad aimed for its first goal.

That first goal off the foot of a Highlander would come not long after. In the 37th minute the freshman Kertgate sent a wonderful strike past the outstretched Hampton goalkeeper for her first career goal assisted by June Stevens. The 2-0 lead would remain for the first half.

Coming into the second half Radford continued to keep the Lady Pirates at bay and create opportunities on the offensive end. 20 minutes in at the 66th minute Radford added on. Kertgate didn't settle for just one goal in her stellar night, she added another taking advantage of an open net to make it 3-0 Radford. Eileen Albers and Cowden provided assists, the first of Cowden's career and the third of the season for Albers.

Adding on to an already impressive night for Cowden, she would score her first career goal in the 75th minute. Cowden took a deflection off a shot at the top of the box and moved into scoring position herself and struck to make it a 4-0 Radford lead. Radford capped the night off with a fifth goal from Amy Swain, her first of the season, assisted by Lilly Short.

Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Radvanyi was the starting goalkeeper for Radford for the second straight game and was stellar once again. Radvanyi captained multiple defensive stops and did a stellar job thwarting out multiple Hampton opportunities. So far on the season Radvanyi has faced 25 shots and allowed just one goal which came against nationally-ranked Virginia.

"We played well through spells of the game tonight," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "It wasn't a full 90-minute performance, which sounds out of place in a 5-0 victory, but we still have plenty to work on. I am happy about how our defense is playing with three shutouts in a row including two this week."

Radford has another jam-packed week of nonconference action coming up and will face another powerful opponent this upcoming Thursday, September 7th at Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on SEC Network+.
